An HVAC company gets recommended by an AI assistant when the assistant finds the same clear facts about it in the places it already reads: your Google Business Profile, review sites, directories and your own website. By the end of this post you will have nine test questions to run today, a score that tells you which of those places to fix first, and the exact rules for schema and review requests so the fixes do not backfire.
There is no AI trick, only the places the assistants already read
When someone asks for "the best HVAC company in Cleveland," the assistant builds an answer from sources such as the Google Business Profile, reviews, directories and website content. HVAC brands that get named tend to have structured question and answer content, verified entities and citations on sites AI trusts.
So skip anything sold as an AI hack. Put your time into the four things below, in this order.
Test nine questions first, because homeowners ask at three stages
Customers do not only type "best HVAC company near me." They ask when the AC stops (is this an emergency?), when they want a price, and when they pick a provider. AI answers are being called the new word of mouth for home services, so check all three stages.
Copy these into a note and swap in your city. Run all nine in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.
| Stage | Question to paste |
|---|---|
| Emergency | My air conditioner stopped working in [city] and it is 95 degrees. Is that an emergency, and who should I call? |
| Emergency | My furnace is blowing cold air in [city]. What should I check before I call someone? |
| Emergency | Who does same day AC repair in [city]? |
| Cost | How much does a new AC installation cost in [city]? |
| Cost | What does an HVAC maintenance plan cost in [city], and is it worth it? |
| Cost | Is a heat pump worth it in [city]? |
| Provider | Best HVAC company in [city]. |
| Provider | Who installs heat pumps in [city] and has good reviews? |
| Provider | What can you tell me about [your company] in [city]? |
Score each answer 1 if your company is named and 0 if not. Write down who was named instead and which sources the assistant cited. Do it again in 30 days, since answers change with the wording and the day.
Three mistakes make a test useless. Testing only "best HVAC company in [city]" misses the emergency and cost questions, where a homeowner may pick a company before reaching a list of providers. Treating one run as final gives a wrong conclusion. Testing from one assistant only hides gaps in the others. The guide to checking whether ChatGPT recommends your business walks through the check in more detail.
Read your score and fix the right thing first
| Your score out of 9 | What it means | Do this first |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | The assistants cannot verify you | Fix the Google Business Profile, reviews and directory listings |
| 1 to 3, all from provider questions | You are known, but your site does not answer homeowners | Write emergency and cost pages |
| 4 to 6 | Partly there | Compare reviews and listings with the competitor that gets named |
| 7 to 9 | Doing well | Keep testing monthly and keep reviews fresh |
This is a working rule, not a measured benchmark. Its job is to tell you where to spend the next hour.
Make the same facts match everywhere
If your Google Business Profile is incomplete, your reviews are stale or you are missing from local directories, AI can skip you. Do these in order:
- Open the Google Business Profile and fill every field: services, service area, hours, phone, photos.
- Write one line in a fixed format: name, address, phone, services, license number if your state issues one. Paste it the same way into the top directories.
- Count the same four things for you and the competitor that gets named: reviews and how recent they are, profile completeness, directories with your matching name, address and phone, and service pages with the city in the title. The biggest gap is your first fix. The profile guide covers the first item in more detail.
Write the pages assistants can quote
Give each core service its own page: AC repair, furnace repair, installation, maintenance plan. Put the city and the service in the title and header, then answer three to five real customer questions in plain words, with the answer in the first two lines.
For cost pages, give a figure the reader can use or say what drives the price. A page with no number gives an assistant nothing to quote.
Add schema with two required fields, then the rest
Schema is structured data that tells machines what your business is. Google requires only name and address for LocalBusiness markup. HVACBusiness is a subtype of LocalBusiness, so the same two fields apply. Telephone, opening hours, URL, price range and service area make it more precise.
- Use the HVACBusiness type.
- Copy the name exactly as it appears on your Google Business Profile.
- Add the address as a full postal address: street, city, state, postal code, country.
- Add telephone, opening hours by day and the cities you serve.
Count your fields out of 7 (name, address, telephone, hours, URL, price range, service area). Anything under 2 of 2 required is the first fix.
Ask every customer for a review the way Google allows
You may ask customers for Google reviews. You may not request a specific rating, wording, employee mention or keyword, or offer a discount, gift or free service in exchange. You also cannot ask only the customers you expect to be happy. Breaking the rules can lead to review removal, profile restrictions or a public warning banner.

Thanks for choosing us today. If you have a minute, we would appreciate your honest feedback on Google: [link].
Your target is customers asked divided by jobs completed equal to 1.0.
Do this in the next ten minutes
Open a note, paste the nine questions with your city, run the first three in ChatGPT and write down who gets named. Then paste your company name and phone into the note and compare them with your Google Business Profile. If one character differs, fix it now. That is the cheapest change on this page.
Let the free scan run the test for you
If you would rather not paste nine questions into three assistants by hand, PickCheck's free scan checks, in about a minute, whether AI assistants recommend your business for your town and trade, and who they name instead. The Fix Kit ($29 one time) turns what it finds into steps, and Monitor ($19 a month) keeps checking after you make changes. Run the free scan.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get my HVAC company recommended by ChatGPT?
Make the same facts about your company match across your Google Business Profile, review sites, directories and website. Then add service pages that answer emergency and cost questions in plain words. There is no separate trick for AI.
Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor instead of me?
The assistant can probably verify your competitor in more places or with fresher reviews. Count reviews, profile completeness, matching directory listings and service pages for both companies; the biggest gap is your first fix.
What schema type should an HVAC company use?
Use HVACBusiness, which is a subtype of LocalBusiness. Only name and address are required; telephone, hours, URL, price range and service area add precision.
Can I offer a discount for a Google review?
No. You can ask for reviews, but you may not request a specific rating, wording, employee mention or keyword, offer incentives, or ask only happy customers.
How often should I test what AI says about my company?
Once a month with the same nine questions. One run proves little because answers change with wording and day.
