ChatGPT Recommends My Competitor: What to Check First

When an AI assistant names a rival and not you, do a side-by-side check of your two Google profiles, websites and reviews, and fix the biggest gap first. It does not mean the rival is better or that you are stuck, because answers change from run to run.

Take a breath

Seeing a rival named and not you feels bad. A few calm facts help. AI answers vary run to run, so one answer is a snapshot. The assistant is reading what it can find. It is not judging who does the better job. And you can look at what is public about both of you, side by side, in about an hour.

Keep it fair. Look at facts, not at the rival's character.

Step 1: Record the answer

Open the assistant and ask "best [trade] in [town]." Copy the full answer into a note with the date. Write down each business named and any reason the assistant gives.

Ask the question two more ways and twice each, on two days:

  • "who should I call for [problem] in [town]"
  • "[trade] near me in [town]"

If the same rival shows up most times, that is worth acting on. If names change a lot, you may be closer than you think. For the basics, read does AI recommend my business.

Step 2: The side-by-side table

Open both businesses' public pages and fill this in. Use only what you can see.

CheckYouRival
Google profile: main category
Services listed on profile
Number of recent reviews
Do they reply to reviews?
Website names the town and service?
Separate page per service or town?
Phone and address match across listings?
Bing listing exists?

Google says it matches a search by relevance, distance and prominence, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking. Distance you cannot change. The other rows you can.

Step 3: Find the biggest gap

Look down the table. Where are you clearly behind?

  1. Profile gaps are fastest. Add services, photos, a description.
  2. Website gaps take longer. Add one page for your top service in your main town.
  3. Review gaps take weeks. Start asking after every job.
  4. Match gaps are quick. Make name, address and phone identical everywhere.

Do one gap per week. Do not copy a rival's words. Write your own, true to your business.

Step 4: Check you are not blocked

OpenAI says sites that opt out of its search crawler (OAI-SearchBot) will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Ask your web person to look at your robots.txt. If your rival allows it and you block it, that is an easy gap to close. Still stuck? Here are 7 common reasons you get skipped.

What not to do

  • Do not post bad things about the rival. It will not help you.
  • Do not buy reviews.
  • Do not copy their site.
