Why Doesn't ChatGPT Recommend My Business? 7 Common Reasons
Most local businesses get skipped because the assistant cannot find clear, matching information about them, or because the question was asked in a way that favors someone else. The seven common reasons are below, and each one comes with a quick way to check it.

First, one honest thing
Nobody outside OpenAI can see exactly how ChatGPT picks. So this list is not a secret formula. It is a list of common gaps that make a business hard to find or hard to describe. Fix a gap and you remove one reason to be skipped. You do not get a promise. For the short answer, see the short answer on whether AI recommends your business.
The 7 reasons
1. Your Google Business Profile is thin
No services listed, no description, few photos, wrong category. Google says it matches a search to a profile by relevance, distance and prominence. A thin profile is weak on relevance.
Check: open your profile. Is your main service the first category?
2. Your details do not match across the web
Your website says one name, Facebook says another, a directory has an old phone number. The assistant sees mixed signals.
Check: search your phone number in quotes. Do all results show the same name and address?
3. Your website does not say what you do and where
A home page that says "quality service you can trust" gives an assistant nothing to quote. A page that says "We repair garage doors in Burnsville and Savage" does.
Check: read your home page as a stranger. Can you tell the service and the town in five seconds?
4. The assistant is blocked from your site
OpenAI says sites that opt out of its search crawler (OAI-SearchBot) will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Some site tools turn crawlers off by mistake.
Check: open yoursite.com/robots.txt. Look for "OAI-SearchBot" with "Disallow."
5. You have few reviews, or none recent
Google says more reviews and good ratings can help local ranking. A business with two reviews from 2019 looks quiet.
Check: count your recent reviews. Do you reply to them?
6. The assistant was not using the web
An assistant without web search answers from what it learned in training, so a newer or smaller business can be missing. With web search on, it can read current pages.
Check: in ChatGPT, see if web search is on for the question.
7. You asked in a way that favors someone else
"Best HVAC company in Minnesota" and "who fixes furnaces in Prior Lake" can produce different names. Wording matters, and so does the day.
Check: try three wordings (see below).
Table: reason, sign, first fix
| Reason | Sign | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Thin profile | Few categories, photos | Finish profile |
| Mismatched details | Different names on listings | Pick one spelling, fix all |
| Vague website | No town or service named | Add service and town pages |
| Crawler blocked | Disallow in robots.txt | Allow OAI-SearchBot |
| Few reviews | Old or none | Ask after each job |
| No web search | Answer ignores new info | Turn search on |
| Different wording | Names change by question | Test three wordings |

How to check by hand
Open ChatGPT and type the question a customer would: "best [trade] in [town]." Write down every name. Then try "who should I call for [problem] in [town]" and "[trade] near me in [town]."
AI answers vary run to run. Ask each question twice, on two days. If you never appear and the same few names always do, the gaps above are where to look. If you appear sometimes, that is normal and not a ranking. To learn the terms, read what AI visibility means.
A faster look
PickCheck's free scan asks one web-connected AI assistant your town-and-trade question and shows whether you are named and who is named instead. About 30 seconds. It does not test ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity by name, so use the hand check above for ChatGPT.
If missed calls are the bigger worry, our sister tool Riot Digital is built for missed calls.
Free, about 30 seconds. Enter your town and trade.
FAQ
Why does ChatGPT name my business one day and not the next?
AI answers change from run to run. The wording of the question, the day, and what a web search finds can all change the result.
Is it because my business is too small?
Not always. Small businesses can be named. Clear listings, a clear website and real reviews give an assistant more to work with.
Does ChatGPT know about a business that just opened?
Without web search it may not. With web search on, it can read new pages. Make sure your profile and site are live.
Can I ask ChatGPT why it left me out?
You can ask, but treat the reply as a guess. The assistant may not be able to explain its own picks.
Will fixing these seven things get me recommended?
Nobody can promise that. They remove common reasons to be skipped.
Does PickCheck show why I was skipped?
It shows whether one web-connected AI assistant named you and who it named instead. The Fix Kit ($29, one time) gives a step-by-step plan. It cannot promise a result.
