How to Show Up in AI Search as a Local Business (2026)

AI search tools answer local questions by reading web pages, listings and reviews, so the work is the same plain work as local SEO: be complete, be consistent, be clear. This page gives a 4-week plan you can do alongside your day job, with no promise of a result.

What "AI search" means here

AI search is when a person asks a chatbot or an AI search box a question and gets one written answer, often with a few sources. For local work the question sounds like "who is a good roofer near me?" The answer may name two to five businesses.

Different tools read different sources, and the answers change from run to run. So this plan does not chase one tool. It builds the base that any of them can read. New to the term? Read what AI visibility means.

The 4-week plan

Week 1: Be findable

  1. Finish your Google Business Profile: main category, services, hours, service area, photos, website link.
  2. Claim your Bing listing. Bing Places can import your Google profile.
  3. Ask your web person to check that your site is not blocking search crawlers. OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, and recommends allowing it.

Week 2: Be consistent

  • Pick one exact version of your name, address and phone number.
  • Fix it on your site, Facebook, Yelp, and the three to five directories your customers actually use.

Week 3: Be clear

  • Add a page for your top service in each main town you serve. Say what you do, where, and how to call.
  • Add a short "questions we get" section on each page with real answers in plain words.

Week 4: Be proven

  • Ask your last ten happy customers for a review.
  • Reply to every review you have.
  • Get one more true mention, such as your chamber of commerce or a supplier's installer list.

How to check by hand

Do this before week 1 and again after week 4. Open an AI assistant with web search on. Ask "best [trade] in [town]," then "who should I call for [problem] in [town]," then "[trade] near me in [town]." Write the date and every name you see.

Because answers vary run to run, ask each question twice. If you try ChatGPT, also try one other assistant. Keep the notes in one sheet. The change from "before" to "after" tells you more than any single answer, and even then it is only a snapshot. Our AI visibility checklist gives you a place to start.

Let a scan do the first look

PickCheck's free scan does a quick before check. It asks one web-connected AI assistant your town-and-trade question and shows whether you are named and who is named instead. About 30 seconds. It does not test ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity by name. Monitor ($19 a month) repeats the check so you can see change over time, and cannot promise any result.

Writing the town and service pages in week 3 is the slow part. Our sister tool Paperboy writes search articles for local businesses.

Free, about 30 seconds. Enter your town and trade.

FAQ

Is AI search different from Google search?

It shows one written answer instead of a list of links, and the answer changes from run to run. Many of the same basics apply: clear pages, matching listings, real reviews.

Do I need to learn new tools?

No. Start with your Google profile, your website and your listings.

How often should I check?

Every few weeks is enough. Answers move around, so look for a pattern, not one result.

Is this the same as local SEO?

It overlaps a lot. Local SEO tools were built for Google Maps and listings.

Can I get a guaranteed spot?

No. Nobody can promise one.

Does PickCheck replace the 4-week plan?

No. The scan shows where you stand. The plan is the work.
