How to Get Your Plumbing Company Named by AI Assistants

October 12, 2026

Ask an AI assistant for the best plumber in your town, and it names someone. If that someone isn't you, start with the places where your business details disagree, then fill in your services, then your reviews. This post gives you the order, three scores to work out with your own numbers, and a log to check who gets named before and after.

The order that matters: mismatches, services, pages, reviews, then re-ask

You can't fix everything in one weekend, so rank it. Here is the order I'd work in for a plumbing company, and what to skip.

Order Fix Why it comes here
1 Listings that disagree on name, phone or address A wrong number or old address sends customers to the wrong place. Cheap to fix.
2 Services missing from your Google profile It is the listing you control most directly, and Google gives you the exact steps.
3 One page per service with the town on your site Gives the profile's services something to match on your own site.
4 Reviews that name the job and the town Slower, and you can't force it. Start the habit now.
5 Ask an AI assistant who it names, and write it down The only way to know whether 1 to 4 changed anything.

Skip schema markup tweaks and "get listed everywhere" packages until 1 to 3 are done. Agencies do recommend schema markup, FAQ content and presence on platforms such as Yelp, Facebook and Nextdoor, but none of it helps if your phone number differs between listings.

Fix the listings that disagree first, and ignore formatting differences

The fix is cheap and it removes a real problem. NAP means name, address and phone number, and consistency means they match across your Google Business Profile, website, Facebook Page, Apple Maps, Bing and directories.

You don't need character-perfect matches. "Suite 4, 12 Marine Parade" and "12 Marine Parade, Ste 4" read as the same address, and so do "(07) 3040 1188" and "07 3040 1188". A real mismatch is a different number, street, suite, business name or service area.

Temper your expectations. One local SEO guide describes matching details as hygiene rather than a ranking lever. It stops damage. It does not win the recommendation by itself.

Work out your mismatch score

Mismatch score = listings with a real mismatch divided by listings you checked.

Example: say a plumber in Prior Lake, Minnesota, checks 12 listings and 3 have a real mismatch. That is 3 of 12, or 25 percent. The goal is 0 of 12. Here is the log for four of those listings (all names and numbers are examples):

Where Name Phone Address Action
Website (master) Example Plumbing LLC (952) 555-0100 100 Main St, Prior Lake None
Google profile Example Plumbing (952) 555-0100 100 Main St, Prior Lake Pick one name, then match the other
Facebook Example Plumbing LLC (952) 555-0199 100 Main St, Prior Lake Fix phone
Yelp Example Plumbing & Heating (952) 555-0100 22 Oak Ave, Savage Fix name and address

Fix the website first, then Google, then Facebook, Apple Maps, Bing, Yelp, Nextdoor and trade directories. Fix the phone number before anything cosmetic. Customers dial it.

Add every service you sell to your Google profile

Google lets you add the services you offer, group them under the right category, and write descriptions and prices for each. For a plumber the suggestions include options such as "Install faucet" or "Repair toilet", and you can add a custom service when yours isn't listed.

  1. Open your Business Profile.
  2. Select Edit services.
  3. Select the services you want to add, or add a custom one.
  4. Group them under the right category and add a short description.
  5. Select Save.

Sample description to adapt: "Water heater repair and replacement in Prior Lake, Savage and Burnsville. Same-day estimates for tank and tankless units."

Work out your service coverage count

Coverage = services listed on your profile divided by services you actually sell. Example: say you sell 12 kinds of jobs and 4 are listed. That is 4 of 12, or 33 percent. The goal is 12 of 12.

Two rules while you're in there:

  • Use the same service names as your website. "Drain cleaning" on the profile and "rooter service" on the site looks like two different jobs.
  • Only publish a price you'll honor. Customers call expecting that number. Leave the field empty if you won't commit.

A profile can list up to 20 service areas. List the towns where you take jobs and drop the rest. A long list of towns you don't serve gets you calls you turn away.

Give each service its own page with the town in it

For every service on your profile, check that your site has one page with the same name. Plumbing GEO guides recommend structured question and answer pages. A page is easy to write:

  • A first line that answers the question: "Water heater not heating in Prior Lake? Here is what usually causes it and when to call a plumber."
  • When to call, what you do and what to expect.
  • Three to five real customer questions, each answered in its first sentence.

Pick the ten questions customers ask before they call, for example "water heater not heating" or "is this a plumber emergency". Count how many already have a plain answer on your site. Write the missing ones first.

Skip generic "plumbing tips" pages with no town or service detail. They say nothing specific about your business.

Ask for reviews that name the job and the town

You can't script reviews, and you shouldn't buy them. You can ask better. After a job, ask: "Would you mind writing two sentences on what we fixed and what town you're in?"

Run the review check

Look at your last 10 reviews. Count how many name the type of job and how many name the town. Example: say 2 name the job and 1 names the town. That is what an assistant and a new customer can learn from your reviews today. The same agency guide that covers schema also points to review platforms such as Yelp, Facebook and Nextdoor, so check each one for the same two counts.

Mistakes that cost you the most

Mistake What it costs
Leaving an old tracking number on a directory Customers reach a dead line or the wrong one
Changing the name on one listing to add keywords You create a new mismatch while fixing another
Treating consistency as a ranking secret A weekend spent while reviews and service pages stay thin
Fixing listings once and never looking again Directories can copy old data back over your correction
Copying one description onto every service The profile says nothing different for each job

Log who gets named before you start and after you finish

Before you change anything, open an AI assistant and ask: "Best plumber in [your town]". Write down who it names. Do it again after you finish steps 1 to 4, and note any change.

Date Question asked Who was named Was I named?
(today) Best plumber in [your town]
(after fixes) Best plumber in [your town]

Use the same wording both times. If you want the long version of this check, our guide to checking whether ChatGPT recommends your business walks through it, and the what to fix first guide covers the general case. This post is the plumber version.

Your next ten minutes

Open your Google profile and your Facebook page side by side and compare the phone number and address. If they differ, fix the wrong one now. That is your first row in the mismatch log.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get my plumbing company to show up in ChatGPT?

Start with the listings that disagree, then add every service you sell to your Google Business Profile, then give each service a page with the town on your site. Then ask the assistant who it names and compare with your log.

Do I have to match my business name exactly on every listing?

Pick one version of your name and use it on every listing. Small formatting differences in addresses and phone numbers are read as the same value, so spend your time on real mismatches such as a different number or an old address.

How many service areas can I list on Google?

A Business Profile can list up to 20 service areas. List the towns where you actually take jobs, and use the same town names on your website.

Should I put prices on my Google services?

Only if you will honor them. Google lets you add prices to services, but you can leave the field empty. A wrong number sends customers who expect it.

Is fixing my name, address and phone number enough?

No. It prevents conflicting details, but it is groundwork. Pair it with a complete services list, a page per service and reviews that name the job and town, then check who the assistant names.
